Case Study
The Center monitors blood lead levels for a number of painters and ironworkers who work on local bridge rehabilitation projects. On one bridge project our physician noticed an increase in the blood lead levels of the painters. In follow up our physician, clinical nurse and industrial hygienist visited the work site and found no provisions for hand washing, or an area for eating that was separate from the work area. The Center staff recommended waterless hand cleaners and several other controls and conducted an education session for the workers. As a result of this intervention the lead levels found in the painters were reduced.
